Dangers of Consent-Related Error

Teresa Pocock, a 49 year old woman with Down Syndrome, was bounced around the system last year among family, police, Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) staff, and Long-Term Care. While this only tells one side of the story, it is enough to recognize that consent-related errors are a very real danger to the rights of those living in the community. Well intentioned, and necessary, legal processes give unimaginable power to a select few in society with the goal of protecting the most vulnerable among us. However, discerning who is in need of protection (and from who) is a complicated task as this story clearly illustrates.
